What to do in the first hour after a Houston pipe burst
Stop the water, make the area safe, document the damage and call for help. A calm, ordered first hour limits how far the water spreads.

A burst pipe moves fast. Water spreads into flooring, wall cavities and the rooms below within minutes, and the choices you make in the first hour decide how much needs to be dried, removed or rebuilt. Use this order of steps.
1. Stop the water at the source
Shut off the main water valve. In many Houston homes it is near the water meter at the front of the property or where the line enters the house, often by the garage or a utility closet. If you cannot find it, close the shut-off for the affected fixture or call your plumber or water utility. Open one faucet at a low point to drain pressure from the line.
2. Make the area safe
- Stay out of standing water near outlets, appliances, extension cords or the electrical panel.
- If you can reach the breaker panel without stepping in water, switch off circuits that serve the wet area. If you cannot, leave it and call an electrician or your utility.
- Keep children and pets out of the area. Wet floors are slippery and ceilings that sag or bulge can fall.
- Do not use a household vacuum on water.
3. Document before you move anything
Take wide photos and short videos of every wet room, the source of the leak, damaged belongings and any visible water lines on walls. Note the time the leak started and when you shut the water off. Your insurance carrier will ask for this, and it also helps your restoration team plan the work.
4. Protect what you can, safely
- Lift small items, rugs and electronics out of the water.
- Place foil or plastic under furniture legs on wet carpet so stains do not transfer.
- Remove standing water with towels or a mop if the amount is small and the area is safe.
- Do not remove soaked drywall or ceilings yourself. It can release dust and make the area less safe.
5. Call for professional help
Call a licensed plumber to repair the pipe and a restoration company to extract water and start drying. Extraction, moisture mapping and structural drying are what stop water that has soaked into materials from becoming a bigger problem. Our burst pipe water damage service covers that process for Houston-area homes and businesses, and our Houston service area page lists how to reach the local team.
6. Notify your insurance carrier
Report the loss to your carrier as soon as you can. Coverage depends on your policy and the cause of loss, and the carrier makes the coverage decision. A restoration company can provide project documentation such as photos, moisture readings and estimates to support that conversation, but the claim itself stays between you and your carrier.
Why the first hours matter in Houston
Houston’s warm, humid climate gives mold a good environment to grow. Mold can begin to develop on wet materials within roughly one to two days, so water that is extracted and dried quickly is much less likely to turn into a mold problem later.
